Pasta with tomato sauce is a staple in our house. Every Monday, Matthew plays darts and Evie & I have a ‘Girls Night’. We put a film on the TV and eat some form of pasta with garlic bread. More often than not it includes a tomato sauce – either as it is, or it forms the basis of a bolognaise or lasagne.
This tomato sauce I can easily make from scratch and typically I already have the ingredients at home. I do experiment from time to time, adding slightly different herbs or seasonings depending on what I have available, or what magic I want to add to the dish. Below is my typical magical tomato sauce.

MAKE IT MAGIC
If you are not interested in the magical & witchy ways, feel free to skip this bit, the sauce is delicious as it is. However, if you are curious this is why I call it a Magical sauce.
I have a stock pot I call my Cauldron. It’s not back or bulbous as you may expect, it’s a simple stainless steel stock pot with a lid. But it’s just the right size for most of what I need to cook, it’s not too heavy to lift when it’s full. It’s my favourite pan (because we ALL have a favourite) and that makes it magical for me.
MAGICAL INGREDIENTS
All food stuffs have magical properties or correspondences associated with them (I will cover this in much greater detail another time) and this sauce was the first recipe I made where I actively used ingredients with specific properties. It was the first recipe in my magical cookbook.
At it’s most basic, the correspondences have come from known or believed medicinal properties, folk lore, historical use or personal beliefs. I still have a LOT to learn, but below are why I add these particular ingredients to my magical sauce.
- Tomatoes to prevent negative energies & inspire creativity.
- Rosemary for protection & cleansing.
- Bay Leaves are often used in manifestation rituals, added to help make wishes come true.
- Sugar to keep everyone sweet.
- Salt for protection, to keep everyone safe.
- Pepper for strength.
- Parsley for prosperity.
- Basil for peace.
- Oregano for happiness & health.

As you put each ingredient in, be aware of why you are adding it and the intentions behind it. Take time to smell and savour each one. Enjoy the process and be present rather than rushing it. Don’t forget to stir clockwise to encourage positive energies. Here are some more ideas on how to add mindfulness to your cooking.
HOW TO MAKE MAGICAL TOMATO SAUCE FOR PASTA

INGREDIENTS
- 2 tablespoon Olive Oil
- 1 large Onion
- 2-3 small Carrots
- 4 cloves of Garlic
- 2 tins of chopped Tomatoes
- 2 sprigs fresh Rosemary
- 2 Bay Leaves
- 1 heaped tablespoon Tomato Puree
- 1 teaspoon Sugar
- Salt & Pepper
- Worchestershire Sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon dried Parsley
- 1/2 teaspoon dried Oregano
- 1/2 teaspoon dried Basil
METHOD
- Dice your onions, grate the carrot and finely chop the garlic. If you know you are going to blend your sauce at the end, you don’t need to worry too much here. I would suggest not making the carrot too chunky as it takes a lot longer to cook.
- Add the oil to a large saucepan or stock pot and gently heat.
- Add your onions and cook gently for around 10 minutes, over a medium-low heat until translucent.
- Next add the grated carrot, stir through the onions, and cook for around 5 minutes.
- Add the garlic, mix through and cook for 2 minutes.
- Tip in the 2 tins of tomatoes, fill one tin up with water and add that to the pan.
- Add your rosemary and bay leaves, tomato puree, sugar, salt and pepper, a few dashes of Worchestershire sauce, plus the dried herbs.
MAGICAL TIP: As you add each ingredient, remind yourself or even say out loud why you are adding it using the correspondence above. For example, I add salt for protection, sugar to keep everyone sweet, and tomatoes for creativity. - Stir it all together, then turn up the heat and bring the whole mixture to the boil.
- Once your sauce comes to a boil, reduce it to a simmer and leave it to reduce for around 20 minutes.
- If you like a chunky sauce you can simply remove the rosemary stalks and bay leaves and use as required. For a smoother sauce, blend it up.
This recipe makes around 1.2 litres of tomato sauce, which you can store in the fridge for up to 3 days, or portion it up and put it in your freezer, where it should keep for 4-6 months.
