“Those who don’t look for magic will never find it.” was said by Roald Dahl.
I am a big believer that magic is out there, if you take the time to look. One thing I want to do with this blog is to help you find some magic in the everyday tasks we have to do. Yes, magic can be found in cooking, making your coffee and even cleaning your home. So, let me tell you what kitchen magic means to me.
I spend a lot of time in our kitchen – whether I am making coffee or cleaning it, cooking (or watching Matthew cook), hosting a party or practicing mindfulness. We are lucky to have a large kitchen, full of light and space. It is our favourite space in the house.

Becoming a Kitchen Witch
I have been interested in the witchy side of life for as long as I can remember. From poring over horoscopes and divination practices, to burning incense and collecting crystals. Over the last few years I have started to study it in more detail and practice more. As an avid baker, I naturally got drawn into the world of the Kitchen Witch. The kitchen is the heart of the home and a space where all the elements come together. Fire from the oven. Water from the sink. Air from the Windows, steam or smoke. Earth from the ingredients such as salt, the vegetables that grow in the soil, the animals that live on the land.
There are so many types of Witches, and a lot of different ways to practice. For example, a Green Witch tends to work with nature, a Sea Witch with water, an Eclectic Witch does a bit of everything. I don’t have an organised practice and am still learning. I love my crystals & tarot cards, and using essential oils in my cleaning. I follow the phases of the moon and the Wheel of the Year, when I remember, but for me a Kitchen Witch is someone who enjoys cooking, someone who wants to make the most of the ingredients and cooks, bakes or brews with intention.

Working with Magical Ingredients
Kitchen Magic, for me, is working with seasonal ingredients and matching ingredients to intentions. For example, Rosemary is considered a herb of protection and strength. Tomatoes bring healing, love and good health to a recipe. And we all know the healing a good cup of tea can bring, especially when it is brewed with intention and stirred clockwise 3 times.
Cooking up a big batch of tomato sauce in my cauldron (aka big stock pot) with my wooden spoon marked with sigils, while listening to Stevie Nicks feels magical to me. And when Evie tells me it’s the best she’s ever tasted. That’s magic too. Whether it’s preparing a meal for your family, brewing a cup of tea for your best friend, or stirring a bowl of nourishing soup just for yourself, there are plenty of ways you can infuse some magic.
Magic & Mindfulness
Being mindful is also a part of it. Remembering to put your phone down and really savour what you are eating. Being completely present with what you’re cooking. Whether that’s sipping your first cup of coffee in the morning, with the sun coming through the window while everyone else is asleep. Or mixing your Yorkshire Pudding batter by hand, making sure there’s no lumps. Maybe it’s the smell of Brownies baking in the oven. The magic of yeast making your bread rise. The fact that flour, butter, eggs and sugar come together to make a cake, and that mixing them in different ways makes different cakes… that’s pretty great too.

I am not going to be able explain it all in one post, so there’s plenty more information to come if this has piqued your interest into the world of Kitchen Witchery. If not, and you still think it’s a bunch of woo-woo, that’s ok too. Not everything will be witchy, but wouldn’t you like just a little bit of magic in your life?
