When you are ready to start bringing some magic into your Kitchen, it can be useful to set up an altar as a reminder of your intention. Ideally the best time to do this would be around the New Moon (when you cannot see the moon in the sky at all) as this is a time for new beginnings and fresh starts. But this is absolutely NOT a requirement, please remember that this is YOUR practice, and you do what feels right for you.

So, why set up a Kitchen Altar?
With the hustle of every day life, sometimes we need a cue or post-it note to give us a nudge towards starting a new habit. When I started, my altar was a little note to myself to remember to ‘Find Magic’. It was set up in the middle of my kitchen island, so I would always see it, and included a candle to represent Fire, a couple of crystals, an oracle card, salt to represent Earth, a shell for Water, and a sigil I created, written on a piece of paper, meaning ‘Find Magic’.

Your altar could also be a place you store magical tools or items you want to use. Such as a wooden spoon with a set intention, a favourite mug, some salt you’ve blessed, or water that’s been charged with the moon. (If some of these don’t mean anything to you yet, please bear with me, I will cover as much as I can in future posts – or drop any questions in the comments and I will reply.)

What to include on your Kitchen Altar
Honestly? Anything at all. Whatever means something to you. There are no rules here. What follows below are suggestions and some altars I have set up before to give you some ideas. Your altar may have a specific intention or goal – maybe to learn to bake bread, to grow your own produce, to have more fun in the kitchen, or show gratitude for all we have. Your altar may be a tribute to a God or Goddess, deity or ancestor. It could just be a shelf for your herbs.

Find a space in your kitchen that won’t be disturbed or be in the way, and something on which to place your altar. To start with it could be a tea cup or saucer, a chopping board or tray, a tiered stand or windowsill. Place items onto it that are meaningful to you. Some people like to include items representing the 4 elements:
- Earth – Salt, Vegetables, Fruit, a Plant, Seeds, rocks.
- Air – Incense, a Feather.
- Fire – Candle.
- Water – a bowl or cup, bottle or jar of water.
You could include seeds (for new beginnings or growth), plants or flowers, written notes or intentions, crystals, candles, herbs, spices, fruits, vegetables, photographs, tarot and oracle cards, figures, seasonal decorations – pretty much anything goes. As long as it means something to you and makes you smile.
