This ritual was written to take advantage of the fact that the New Moon in March coincided with the Spring Equinox and start of the Astrological Year. The New Moon marks the beginning of the lunar cycle and is a perfect time to set intentions and goals for the next 28 days. The Spring Equinox (or Ostara) and the start of the Astrological New Year is when we can feel the earth begin to wake up, seeds are sprouting and spring flowers are showing their faces – this is the moment the light finally balances the dark. The energy right now is saying ‘Let’s Go!’
As you know, I want to build On My Dining Table into a community of magic makers and seekers of whimsy. A space for mindfulness and intention. To help me reach my goals, this is the the exact ritual I am using tonight to ground my goals and set my intentions for this coming year.
Whether you are a busy mother, a weary creative, or simply someone seeking a bit more whimsy in the wash-load, this ritual is for you.
Why do a ritual?
Our brains are known to skip past the boring bits we do all the time, this is why we find ourselves on auto-pilot while driving to work. So taking the time to do something different and out of the ordinary will stick a little longer in your mind, why not give it a try?
The Equinox Kitchen Ritual
What you’ll need:
- A small bowl of water (representing your emotions/intuition)
- A candle (representing your spark/action)
- A piece of paper and a pen
- A sprig of something green (rosemary from the garden or even a leaf from a houseplant)
- A drink
1. The Cleanse: Before you begin, wipe down your dining table with a damp cloth. As you wipe, imagine you are cleansing away the ‘winter’ of your mind – clear away any doubts, tiredness and ‘should-haves.’
2. The Spark: Light your candle. You can use colour magic to mark a set intention if you like, a white candle works as a ‘catch all’ or use the one you have on your kitchen altar. Say to yourself: “I step out of the shadows and into the light of my own potential.”
3. Sow The Seeds: On your piece of paper, write down three ‘Seeds of Intent’ for this year. Don’t write what you think you should do, write what your heart tells you.
- Example: ‘I intend to find peace in my morning routine.’
- Example: ‘I intend to nourish my family with intention.’
4. The Blessing: Dip your green sprig into the water and lightly flick a few drops onto your paper. This ‘waters’ your intentions.
5. The First Nourishment: Fold the paper towards you to call the intentions in. You can either keep the intentions safe for you to look back on or burn them (safely) to release them into the universe. Take a couple of deep breaths as you sip your drink slowly. As you do, imagine those intentions taking root in your bones.
While the Spring Equinox holds some extra energy for this practice, remember that magic isn’t bound by a single date on the calendar. You can return to this ritual whenever you feel the need to clear the ‘winter’ from your heart or plant a fresh seed of intent. Whether it’s a quiet Monday morning or a mid-season reset, your table is always waiting to hold space for your transformation.
